If you’re trekking during the snow season, this would typically be the day when you start encountering a snow-covered trail. However, during our December trek, we were met with minimal snowfall, only encountering a small patch along the way. As we continued our journey, we reached Bekal Khal at approximately 10,000 feet elevation, where colorful tents dotted the landscape. Today proves to be the most challenging day of hiking, encompassing a mix of gradual ascents, plateau walks, and steep climbs. Our route leads us to cross two incredibly picturesque points of this trek – Jhandi Top and Brahmatal Top from where we see 360 degree view of The Himalaya.

Throughout the Brahmatal trek, there’s no treeline to obstruct our view, allowing us to steadily soak in the surrounding beauty. From Brahmatal top we get to witness 360 degree view of The Himalayas with numerous mountain ranges visible – on a clear day. Luckily for us it was a bright and sunny day and we were able to see almost all the mountain ranges that can be seen from here.

After a rewarding two hours at the top, we began our descent towards Brahmatal, our final campsite of the trek. After about an hour’s descent, we arrived at our tents. Unlike previous campsites, this one was out in the open, devoid of trees or nearby mountains. As a result, it was quite windy and exceptionally cold here. Packed in layers and layers of clothing we came out of our tents to enjoy the grandeur of The Himalayas and Brahmatal Lake – our final destination.

In the evening, we ventured up to the Brahmatal lake, and since it wasn’t frozen, we witnessed the reflection of the surrounding mountains shimmering in its waters. It was simply breathtaking. This holy lake holds numerous folklores and legends, revered by locals who gather here during festivals like Janmashtami for prayers.

The sunset from up here was also mesmerizing, and we spent hours in silence, simply witnessing the magic of nature unfold before us.

At night, after dinner, we ventured out into the cold, gazing up at the stars high in the sky, a mesmerizing canvas of its own

Day 6 – Trek from Brahmatal to Lohajung(5 – 7 hrs hike)

The Final Stretch

Today marked the culmination of our Brahmatal trek, the last leg of our journey. With a 7 AM start, we embarked on a 10 km stretch, beginning our day with a route alongside the alpine Brahmatal lake, its surface shimmering with a thin sheet of ice in the sub-zero temperatures.

As the sun struggled to rise, we bundled up in layers, preparing for the day ahead. Our path led us on a plateau walk, passing by a quaint Devi temple along the way. After a brief 15-20 minute stroll, we began a gradual ascent towards Jhandi Top. As we trekked along the route, the first rays of sun welcomed us, gently urging us to shed a few layers of clothing and bask in its warmth.

Two hours later, we reached the breathtaking Jhandi Top, where we paused to rest, soaking in the panoramic mountain views that surrounded us. Had some chai and bun maska.

With renewed energy, we commenced our descent. Just about a kilometer ahead, after a brisk 15-20 minute walk, the landscape transforms once more as we enter the enchanting jungle of oak and rhododendron trees. Continuing our journey, we encounter another campsite named Khorurai. While it offers a tempting break spot, our spirits were high, and we pressed on. The path led us downhill all the way to Lohajung from Jhandi Top, characterized by dusty, sandy trails, occasionally steep in some sections.

From this point onward, it’s another two-hour journey to reach the base village, provided you maintain a steady pace. Of course, your pace may vary, but our group’s enthusiasm kept us moving swiftly, and before we knew it, we arrived at the base village in no time. Our trek from Brahmatal to Lohajung totaled five hours, a remarkable achievement that left us feeling immensely proud of our journey.

Furry Friends

Interacting with the furry companions along the Himalayan trails adds an extra layer of warmth and joy to the trekking experience. For many trekkers, including ourselves, these four-legged friends become an integral part of the journey. Whether it’s sharing a meal or simply enjoying their company, the presence of Himalayan dogs enriches the trek in unique ways, making it all the more memorable and fulfilling

Upon our return, we indulged in a satisfying lunch, refreshed ourselves with a shower, and embarked on a leisurely stroll around the village. Immersed in the serene ambiance, we relished every moment, cherishing the simplicity of village life. Knowing that the next day would mark our return to the bustling city life, we savored the tranquility of the present moment, etching the memories of our trek deep into our hearts.
